What Questions Should You Ask a Contractor's References?

     It is often a good idea to check references whenever you are interviewing a potential contractor for your remodeling project. This gives you an objective way to find out some information from sources other than the contractor him/herself. Here are a few good questions to ask previous customers:

• Did the contractor communicate well?
• Were you pleased with the quality of work?
• Were you satisfied with the remodeler's business practices?
• Did the crew show up on time?
• Were you comfortable with the subcontractors on your job?
• Was the job completed on schedule?
• Did the remodeler fulfill his or her contract?
• Did the contractor stay in touch throughout the project?
• Were the final details finished in a timely manner?
• Would you use this contractor again without hesitation?
• Was the job site kept clean during the project?
• Was the remodeler professional, ethical, honest and fair throughout the
   process?
• Were you satisfied with the way the project was managed?
• Did any issues arise during the project? If so, how did the remodeler
   handle them?

     Getting this kind of information from a few different sources will give you a much better sense of the overall level of professionalism, reliability and experience of the contractor you are interviewing!
